I think we should keep the front-engined Vette alive and take the mid-engined setup and call it the Corvair!! It’s only logical IMO. And the name “Corvair” sounds awesome!

Yeah.... GM killed that name for a reason. I love the Corvair, but most of the buying public associate it with Unsafe At Any Speed.

I’ve been saying that for a long time, for the main reason that the original Corvair prototype *was* a rear-engined Corvette.

And yet, I think the legend of the old Corvair isn’t something that people attach a lot of personal feeling to. It’s not “my dad died in a Corvair”, it’s more “that’s the car that Ralph Nader...” The myth has so outgrown any actual issue with the car that I think it’s a paper tiger. GM would probably be able to swing the name if they were just brazen enough, particularly with Corvairs appreciating in the classics market of late...

The Vette is already mid-engined, it's just in front of the driver. I don't think moving the V8 a few feet backwards and moving the 300# driver a few feet forward will really make much difference.

Monza GT!

I’m guessing it’ll be sold as a Cadillac.

I think you’re being too kind with the assumption that the Corvette driver’s only 300 lbs.

Base Corvette= Stingray. Mid-Engine halo Vette= Mako.

And yet, the 911 still exists...

Ash stop, you’re making too much sense. If we don’t move the engine behind the driver, all the armchair pilots on the internet will keep saying it’s not as good...
Seriously, anyone who knows anything about the Corvette would know how futile and bad this move is. Its going to have the same performance and cost much more now.

It was a sports car while the Corvair was a family car, so didn’t receive or deserve the same attention. Now the
other
Beetle on the other hand....

The 1954 Corvair was a front engined fastback concept. The rear engine one was the 1964 XP-819.

OK, let’s take a step back into the more emotional/flameworthy realm:
Yeah, let’s just fuck up a perfectly good American icon. How well does that rear-mounted mid-engine work for all the Ferraris chasing Vettes around the track? The only engine a Vette driving follows around is his own!
(too much?)

That frame looks.... Terrifying. OMG, how did it not warp just from looking at it?

GM killed the Corvair because the Ford Mustang and Nova proved that people didn’t give two shits about handling and innovation. They wanted cheap V8s.

Already accidentally confirmed as a Chevy by one of their suppliers.

Valid point that “Stingray” is a relative latecomer to how Vette names work. It’s also not as if wildly different models can’t have versions of the same name in the GM lineup...
Nor in general, with related but not identical platforms:

Their pre and post Nader sales figures tell a different story. They dropped by over 50% immediately afterwards.

I’ll just stand here and be wrong in my wrongness, then. It *ought* to have been rear engined - those vents and the “jet exhaust” going to waste is just wrong.

Now that we’ve brought up the mid-engined ‘Vette, you know what really still impresses me? That original Mustang mid-engined concept that they brought to a show in the ‘60s (or ‘50s?) and that Jalopnik did an article on a while back. I understand why they didnt do it, but damn, that shouldve been a real car alongside the Mustang.

Well nevermind then. Oh well.

If I had the space I would buy a Corvair, they are still cheap. I like quirky cars and they are!

If a Ferrari’s chasing a Vette, it’s generally because the Vette has a good experienced driver in it and the Ferrari doesn’t or the Ferrari driver isn’t really pushing. As easy as it is to make fun of the 300 lb retirees poorly parking in the handicapped spot because they have the diabeetus, a ton of them get tracked. They’re probably closer to the universal track car than the Miata. I see just as many at every track day and autoX and for some of the drivers, it’s their cheap car in the same way that alot of people buy a Miata as a second car for the track so it won’t be as big of a deal if they throw it into the wall. It’s easier to replace a mass-produced $70k Corvette than a $300k low-volume Ferrari. Even if money’s no object, getting another Ferrari isn’t the easiest thing in the world.

It’s also not as if naming convention even matters...
Ahem

At least with FMR vs. RMR, you have the rear wheels driven and similar weight balance in most cases. Different balance, engine orientation, wheels driven, etc. in the case of certain alleged Malibus - not much similarity beyond “engine in the front somewhere”.

The 911 is known as the Widowmaker...which sounds a lot cooler to most people than “Unsafe At Any Speed”.
Gee, thanks Nader...

I agree with everything you just said. The Corvette is reaching the pinnacle of engineering perfection with the current technology available, but we’re gonna throw away everything we’ve done with the car so far because people want more Ferrarri in their Chevy.
![]() 08/01/2016 at 13:26 |

You’re kidding yourself if you think the only way a Vette would beat a Ferrarri is driver-related. The Vette been a world beater for years now. The C7 just put an exclamation on it.

I remember when the C5 came out and everyone moaned about how it looked too much like a Ferrari :D

Yeah but that was before the internet and droves of people that will never buy one anyway couldn’t voice their opinion lol
